Taiwan reported 15 new local cases of COVID-19 on Monday. Authorities also reported 36 more imported cases among people arriving in Taiwan. There were no deaths reported.
Eight of the new cases were detected in Kaohsiung City, four in Yilan County and three in Taoyuan City.
The cluster in Kaohsiung City is centered around workers at the city’s port. Monday’s new cases include three port workers and two contractors, along with a mother and son working at a grocery store near to the port. The final case is a family member of a previously confirmed case.
The four cases in Yilan County are all linked to a cluster infection at a hotel in Jiaoxi Township. Local health officials have already tested 915 people and identified just over 90 contacts of the new cases. Health Minister Chen Shih-chung says there is no evidence of further community spread so far.
One of the new cases in Taoyuan City is a family member of a previous case linked to the cluster infection at a local steakhouse. He tested positive while in quarantine, so authorities say there is little risk of infecting others.
The remaining two cases in Taoyuan City were uncovered during mass testing in an industrial park where two companies have seen recent cluster outbreaks. One of the two cases tested positive while in isolation, so there is little risk of infecting others. Authorities are tracing potential contacts of the second case.
Taiwan also recorded 36 imported cases of COVID-19 on Friday. Twenty three of those tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, while another 13 tested positive in quarantine. They include 20 travelers from the United States; two each from Palau and Indonesia; and one each from Hong Kong, Vietnam, the Netherlands, Haiti, the Philippines, the Dominican Republic and Belize. Five more are still under investigation.
