Taiwan’s Atomic Energy Council says it is not concerned by reports of a coolant leak at Japan’s stricken Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant. Reuters reported on Sunday that about four tonnes of calcium chloride solution had leaked from storage tanks at the facility.
The council says that the solution is not radioactive, and nearby monitoring stations have not detected any abnormal increase in radioactivity levels.
The Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant suffered a meltdown in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan in 2011.
Last year, Japan announced that it would release treated radioactive water from the plant into the ocean at the end of 2022. Taiwan has expressed its “grave concern” over the plan.
