Vice President Lai Ching-te has met briefly with US Vice President Kamala Harris for the first time since Lai and Harris came to office. The exchange of greetings between the US and Taiwan vice presidents came in Honduras, at the inauguration ceremony of Honduran President Xiomara Castro.
Harris told reporters after the ceremony that Lai introduced himself to her, and they had a brief conversation about Taiwan and the United States’ common interest in Honduras. Harris says Lai also expressed interest in the United States’ Root Causes Strategy, which aims to address the causes of migration by Central Americans to the United States.
A White House official said on Wednesday that there were no plans for Kamala Harris to hold more substantial talks with Lai.
Lai is in Honduras to represent Taiwan at Honduran President Xiomara Castro’s inauguration ceremony.
Honduras is one of 14 countries that maintain full diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
