US Assistant Secretary of State Brian A. Nichols says he believes that Taiwan and Honduras will continue to build strong relations. Nichols was speaking on Thursday after US Vice President Kamala Harris voiced concern for Taiwan-Honduras ties to the new Honduran President Xiomara Castro.
Both Harris and her Taiwanese counterpart Lai Ching-te were at Castro’s inauguration ceremony in late January.
Nichols says that Harris had brought up the importance of Taiwan-Honduras relations to Castro and that Castro has reiterated her government’s commitment to maintaining good relations with Taiwan.
Nichols also says that the United States has plans to hold talks on diplomatic issues with Taiwan’s eight diplomatic allies in the Western Hemisphere. He says that the US will continue to talk to those countries about the benefits of relations with Taiwan, which shares their values of democracy and human rights.
