COVID-19 (2/6): Taiwan reports 14 local, 29 imported cases

Taiwan reported 14 new local cases and 29 imported cases of COVID-19 on Sunday and no related deaths. Of the imported cases, 12 were confirmed at the Taoyuan airport.

The figures were a drop from Saturday which saw 40 domestic and 32 imported cases. On Saturday, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung said that despite an uptick in cases that day, there is no indication of worsening community spread.

Sunday's domestic cases were all related to existing clusters and all but one tested positive during quarantine.

Seven of the new cases are Askey Computer Corp. factory employees in the Farglory Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Taoyuan. The cluster at the FTZ has 158 cases to date,

Four other cases are linked to a cluster at the Port of Kaohsiung, bringing the number of cases there to 125. The three other domestic cases are New Taipei residents.

Sunday’s imported cases included people coming in from the US, Canada, Thailand, South Korea, South Africa, Austria, the Philippines, Poland, Italy, Singapore, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Meanwhile, as the Lunar New Year holidays come to an end, preschools in Taoyuan and Kaohsiung will postpone opening to Feb. 14. Elementary schools, junior high schools, and senior high throughout Taiwan will begin the new semester as scheduled on Feb. 11.

Taiwan has seen 19,144 COVID cases including 15,197 domestic cases and 851 deaths.
