Honduran President Xiomara Castro has tested positive for COVID-19, days after meeting face-to-face with Taiwanese Vice President Lai Ching-te. Lai was part of a government delegation that attended Castro’s presidential inauguration in Honduras in late January.
Castro says she tested positive on Sunday with mild symptoms of the disease.
Taiwan’s Presidential Office says Lai tested negative after taking a rapid test on Monday morning.
The foreign ministry says that the delegation adhered to strict prevention protocols while in Honduras. It says that Lai met with Castro on January 26, and attended her inauguration on January 27.
The foreign ministry says that the delegation is now back in Taiwan and undergoing quarantine. It says that no delegation members have tested positive for COVID-19 so far.
In response to Castro’s infection, President Tsai Ing-wen has asked Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and the Taiwanese embassy in Honduras to wish Castro a speedy recovery.
