An unusual sight happens around this time of year when there’s a sudden change in temperature at the border of Miaoli and Taichung. Instead of drifting across the sky, clouds in the area can be seen cascading down the side of the mountains.
Long stretches of clouds are seen billowing down the side of the Guandao Mountain Range. They flow down to the Jiangma Yuan Recreation Area in Miaoli. The cascading clouds and the mountain’s observation deck at 800 meters above sea level have attracted photographers to the area year after year.
Photographer Chang Mai-shih said the sight can be seen from November to March but you won’t always be lucky enough to catch it. The reason for this unique cloud movement is that most mountain ranges in Taiwan run north to south except for the Guandao Mountain Range which cuts from east to west. The range becomes a point for sudden changes in temperature and for clouds to form and flow downward instead.
Such a rare picturesque sight has made the junction between Miaoli and Taichung a popular tourist site.
