Taiwan to open borders and shorten quarantine as booster shot rate rises

Taiwan is planning to open its borders and shorten its quarantine period as more people get booster shots. Taiwan currently requires a 14-day quarantine for all arrivals. However, that long quarantine period may be shortening to just 10 days very soon.

Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center announced plans to loosen border restrictions after at least 50% of the population has gotten their 3rd vaccine dose. It's predicted that Taiwan will hit this mark in late March.

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Tuesday that Taiwan is considering easing border restrictions, starting with the entry of foreign tourists and then lifting the ban on overseas travel by tour groups.  Health minister Chen Shih-chung said welcoming tourists to Taiwan would help Taiwan's foreign exchange reserves.

While people traveling for business may be the next group of people to enter Taiwan, other industries eagerly await the arrival of tourists. A leader in the tourism sector, Lin I-shun says this process cannot be rushed. The first priority is slowly opening up to businesspeople.

The Tourism Bureau says it plans to reopen the international tourism industry based on government announcements in the coming months. It may not be time to pack your suitcase yet, but these new developments will certainly make it easier for people to travel abroad again soon.
