A delegation of British lawmakers has postponed its visit to Taiwan. In a press release late on Thursday, Taiwan’s foreign ministry said COVID-19 was the reason for the delay.
More specifically, Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) is quoting an unnamed representative of the UK Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee who says that several members of the delegation have tested positive for COVID-19.
A delegation from the committee had been due to arrive in Taiwan on Sunday for a four-day visit. The delegation had planned to meet with several senior members of Taiwan’s government, including President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier Su Tseng-chang.
If the visit had taken place, it would have been the first visit to Taiwan by a delegation from the Foreign Affairs Committee since 2006.
Right now, it is not clear when the rescheduled visit will take place.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it understands the UK committee’s decision to delay the visit. It says it welcomes the committee to send a delegation at a later date.
