Premier Su Tseng-chang says Taiwan will not import eggs from areas of Japan affected by avian influenza.

Right now, eggs in Taiwan are in short supply, and Taiwan’s government is planning imports from a number of countries to tackle the shortage. Japan is one of those countries.

However, in recent months Japan has faced several outbreaks of avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. Taiwan’s agricultural council listed Japan as an affected area in 2020, and imposed a ban on imports of poultry and egg products. That ban is still in place.

The government says it will temporarily work around that ban in order to address Taiwan’s egg shortage.

Premier Su Tseng-chang says Taiwan will not import eggs from areas affected by bird flu. He says the government places great emphasis on food safety, and will ask Japan to include inspection certificates with each batch of eggs.

Su also says Taiwan will carry out its own tests on each batch of eggs. He says Taiwanese shoppers should rest assured that the eggs will be safe.
