COVID-19 (02/19): Taiwan reports eight local, 65 imported cases

Taiwan reported eight new local cases of COVID-19 on Saturday. Health authorities also reported 65 more imported cases among people arriving in Taiwan.
There were no deaths reported.

Six of the eight local cases tested positive while in quarantine. One of the cases is a nurse caring for confirmed patients with minor or no symptoms at a quarantine facility. Other workers at the facility have so far tested negative. Another local case is a member of the security staff at Taoyuan International Airport. Three cases each were identified in a cluster centered around a quarry in Miaoli and a cluster involving a religious gathering at a restaurant and KTV club in Taipei.

Taiwan also recorded 65 imported cases of COVID-19 on Friday. Of those, 31 tested positive upon arrival in Taiwan, with the remaining 34 determined as positive during quarantine. The total number includes five travelers from Canada, three from Malaysia, two each from Germany, the UK, the Philippines, and Spain, and one each from Sweden, Poland, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Vietnam, Nepal, Austria, Hong Kong, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Argentina, and China. Travel histories of the remaining 24 cases remain under investigation.

One of the cases currently classified as imported is a person who tested negative both during and at the end of quarantine in late January. The person received an additional dose of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in early February, before testing positive ahead of their next trip abroad. The authorities are investigating the source of infection and may change the classification of this case based on the results.
