Taiwan’s military says it is boosting its intelligence operations and monitoring activities in the Taiwan Strait. That statement on Thursday comes after Russia began a military operation in Ukraine, launching rocket attacks against several Ukrainian cities.
Defense Ministry spokesperson Shih Shun-wen says Taiwan’s armed forces are maintaining a normal state of battle readiness. He says the military is on alert to signs of a threat to Taiwan.
President Tsai Ing-wen condemned Russia’s actions in a statement on Wednesday, before Russia began a wider military campaign against Ukraine. Tsai says Russia is violating Ukraine’s sovereignty, and she is calling for all parties involved to “resolve their disputes rationally [and] peacefully”.
