Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it would welcome a visit to Taiwan by Belizean Prime Minister John Antonio Briceño.
Briceño has not publicly confirmed plans to travel to Taiwan. However, media reports suggest Briceño is scheduled to receive an honorary doctorate from Kun Shan University in Taiwan’s southern city of Tainan on March 11.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said on Thursday it would confirm details of the potential trip at a later date.
Taiwan’s Vice President Lai Ching-te met with Briceño in January this year, during his visit to Honduras for the inauguration of the country’s president, Xiomara Castro. Lai says that according to his understanding, Briceño has already made plans to visit Taiwan in March.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou says that Taiwan is actively encouraging visits of high-level officials from Taiwan’s democratic allies. Belize is one of 14 countries that have full diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
Ou says Belize is an important friend and ally to Taiwan in Central America and the Caribbean Sea. She says that details of the trip will be announced when relevant arrangements have been made.
