Taiwan remains the second freest country in Asia and the 17th freest country in the world. That’s according to the latest report on global freedom published on Thursday by Freedom House, a non-profit organization based in the United States.
Taiwan scored 94 out of 100 to rank as the second most free country in Asia behind Japan. It was the same score that Taiwan received last year. Taiwan is tied in 17th place in the world with Iceland, Estonia, Chile and Germany.
Freedom House’s ranking puts Taiwan ahead of the United States, the UK and France.
According to the Freedom House report, Taiwan scored 38 out of 40 for political rights and 56 out of 60 in civil liberties. In the area of internet freedom, Taiwan received a score of 80 out of 100. Taiwan’s overall score classified it as a “free” country on the listing.
Meanwhile, China is reported as a “not free” country in the world, placing it at 185th spot with a score of 9 out of 100. It has the same ranking that it received in 2021.
