A delegation of former US defense officials and policy advisors arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, the delegation will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen. Presidential Office spokesperson Xavier Chang says the two sides will discuss US-Taiwan ties and issues relating to regional peace and stability.
Leading the US delegation is a former top defense advisor to the Bush and Obama administrations. Michael Mullen was the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff between 2007 and 2011.
Mullen is traveling to Taiwan alongside four other former security officials under Presidents Bush and Obama. Michèle Flournoy, Megan O’Sullivan, Michael Green and Evan Medeiros took responsibility for US policy in several regions, including East Asia and the Middle East.
Taiwan’s government is welcoming the visit. Presidential Office spokesperson Xavier Chang says the delegation’s trip to Taiwan shows that US-Taiwan ties are still “rock-solid”.
