“Understandable” some Taiwanese want to fight in Ukraine: Foreign ministry

Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it’s “completely understandable” that some Taiwanese want to fight alongside Ukrainian forces against the Russian invasion. But Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou nonetheless stresses that the government is advising against all travel to Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for volunteer fighters from other countries to form an “international legion” in Ukraine to repel Russian forces.

Ou says the government can understand why some Taiwanese people might want to join the legion to support Ukraine’s military resistance. She says the government stands with Ukraine and strongly condemns Russia’s invasion of the country.

But Ou says the government’s official advice remains the same: Taiwanese people in Ukraine should leave as soon as possible, while people outside of Ukraine should avoid all travel to the country.
