Human error was the reason for a power cut on Thursday that left more than 5 million households in Taiwan without electricity. That’s according to President Tsai Ing-wen.
On Friday, Tsai visited Hsinta Power Plant in Kaohsiung City. It was a fault in one of the plant’s substations that set off a chain reaction causing Thursday’s countrywide power outage.
Tsai says she was informed by the economics ministry that human error was behind the fault at the substation. She is apologizing to people in Taiwan for any inconvenience caused by the blackout. Tsai says that her apology is especially directed towards people in southern Taiwan where the power cut lasted longer.
Premier Su Tseng-chang says he has ordered the economics ministry to put together a comprehensive report on the reasons for the blackout. He says that the people responsible for the accident will be held accountable.
