Eight Taiwanese citizens and their families have been safely evacuated from Ukraine, after their government-chartered transport crossed the Polish border. Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it’s the third evacuation of its kind.
According to the ministry, a total of 55 Taiwanese nationals have fled from Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in late February.
That leaves just one Taiwanese national living in southern Ukraine, who has declined Taiwan’s offers of help leaving the country.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou says the government will respect the person’s decision to remain in Ukraine.
As for the people who have been evacuated to Poland, Ou says Taiwanese authorities will help them return to Taiwan or travel to other countries if necessary.
The foreign ministry is thanking staff at Taiwan’s Polish representative office and the Taiwan Trade Center in Kyiv for their help delivering people in Ukraine to safety.
