Premier Su Tseng-chang says Taiwan is recognized as a global leader when it comes to stopping the spread of COVID-19.

Su says Taiwan’s success at handling the pandemic is the result of the leadership of President Tsai Ing-wen, the unity of Taiwanese people, and close cooperation between central and local authorities.

Su is also encouraging people in Taiwan to get vaccinated and follow the government’s COVID-19 guidelines. He says that many elderly people in Hong Kong chose not to get vaccinated against COVID-19, and they have suffered for it.

Su says experts agree that vaccination is the most effective way of stopping the spread of the disease.

To help raise vaccination rates among the elderly, Su is urging people to encourage their elderly relatives to get vaccinated. Only then, Su says, can Taiwan stay safe after COVID-19 measures are relaxed.

The premier’s statement on Monday comes as Taiwan began allowing incoming travelers to spend just 10 days in quarantine on arrival. That’s down from 14 days previously.
