Changhua temple marks anniversary with 67 performance groups
A temple in Changhua went all out for its 25th anniversary

Taiwan’s religious celebrations are known for being extravagant and spectacular. But one temple in Changhua County upped the ante when it invited 67 performance groups to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Extravagant trucks decked out in bright neon colors line the side of a road in Changhua County. There are 66 of them altogether, each one hosting a Taiwanese glove puppetry troupe. Off to the side, there’s a stage where visitors enjoy Taiwanese opera. It’s a scene worthy of a big religious festival, but this procession is here just to celebrate a local temple’s 25th anniversary.

The grand motorcade stretches over 600 meters long. Locals say it takes half-an-hour just to see every stall. They say that it’s the biggest event that their small village has ever seen.

The celebrations go from morning until night. As the sun sets, the temple brings out food for visitors to enjoy.

In Taiwan’s folk religion, celebrations are big and boisterous occasions. And this run-of-the-mill temple is showing bigger establishments you don’t need a holiday to throw a party to remember.
