People in Taiwan have donated nearly NT$300 million (US$10.6 million) to Ukrainian refugees. That was the word from the foreign ministry on Tuesday.

At the Legislature on Tuesday, lawmakers pressed officials to expand its aid to the refugees.  DPP lawmaker Wang Ting-yu asked if Taiwan could allow relatives of Ukrainians in Taiwan to come from Poland to live here for a while. Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said that the ministry is working on this. As long as health authorities open up visitation rights for relatives, they will allow them in on a case by case basis.

Wang also asked if Taiwan’s medical volunteers could go and help Ukrainian refugees. Minister Wu said that the government needs to wait for the countries hosting these refugees to request aid before they could start organizing volunteers to help.

From March 7 to 18, the foreign ministry is collecting donations of goods and medicine for Ukrainian refugees. The government has posted relevant instructions and a list of acceptable goods which include blankets, face masks, raincoats, and other suitable items.
