Belize Prime Minister John Briceño led a delegation to Taiwan on Tuesday for a five-day visit. Briceño will be meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Belize is one of Taiwan’s 14 diplomatic allies. It is Briceño’s first trip to Taiwan as prime minister. Briceño took up the position in November 2020.
Tsai will also be welcoming Briceño with a military salute and conferring the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon on the prime minister for promoting ties between Taiwan and Belize.
Briceño will also travel to Tainan in southern Taiwan with Vice President Lai Ching-te. Briceño will receive an honorary doctorate from the Kun Shan University in Tainan. The prime minister’s itinerary will also include a Taiwan-Belize investment and trade cooperation conference, a visit to the International Cooperation and Development Fund organization, and a meeting with students from Belize studying in Taiwan.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry said that Taiwan and Belize have strong relations and have cooperation in the fields of infrastructure, public health, agriculture, education, and women empowerment.The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations since 1989.
