Taiwan’s national academy for research, Academia Sinica, says it will take in 10 students and academics from Ukraine. The academy says that comes in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee the country.
In a statement earlier in March, Academia Sinica said it “objects to any and all acts of violence that destroy world peace and violate human rights”. In the same statement, it said its “chief concern” is the safety of Ukrainian scholars and students.
Academia Sinica President James C. Liao says the academy’s plan right now is to take in 10 scholars and students from Ukraine. But he says he is not ruling out accepting more.
It isn’t clear when the Ukrainian scholars will arrive.
Liao also says the academy has one cooperation agreement with a Russian institution. When that agreement ends in June, Liao says Academia Sinica will not renew it.
