People in Ukraine are tuning in to Radio Taiwan International (RTI) for Russian-language news and features.
A listener in Ukraine’s second largest city Kharkiv has written in to thank RTI for its Russian broadcasts at a “difficult and challenging time”.
RTI, which is Taiwan’s national broadcaster, is using shortwave radio to reach Ukrainian listeners during the Russian invasion.
Shortwave radio broadcasts travel a long way. That makes them an effective way to reach people in areas affected by war, where local radio stations might be damaged.
The coordinator of RTI’s Russian service, Masha Lee, says that the service aims to provide reliable information in Russian about the war in Ukraine. Russian authorities have shut down many independent media outlets in Russia and made spreading “fake news” about the war a criminal offense.
