Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it will give its blessing to Yoon Suk-yeol for winning South Korea’s presidential election. Yoon beat the ruling party’s Lee Jae-myung by less than 1% in the final vote.
The foreign ministry says it will send Yoon its best wishes through the proper diplomatic channels. It says it also congratulates the South Korean people for peacefully and democratically electing a new leader.
Taiwan and South Korea, the ministry says, share values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law. It says Taiwan hopes to build on its existing relationship with South Korea and work together to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
