President Tsai Ing-wen says that Taiwan is working with like-minded countries to advocate for gender equality around the world. Tsai made these remarks on Monday, shortly after International Women’s Day and Taiwan’s own gender equality week.

Tsai says that Taiwan is already a world leader when it comes to gender equality and women’s rights. Government statistics suggest Taiwan ranks first in Asia and sixth in the world.

Tsai says that she has seen an increasing number of women building their professional careers in politics and business, typically male-dominated fields.

But the president says there is always room for improvement and Taiwan could build a more inclusive society by working with other progressive countries. Taiwan has already collaborated with countries like Australia, Japan, and the United States to promote gender equality in the workplace and economy. These have been key topics at international conferences and platforms like the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and the Global Cooperation and Training Framework.

Tsai says that Taiwan is glad to share its own experiences in breaking down gender barriers, while also learning from other leaders. She says that the world should strive to build systems where people are judged on their merit and capabilities and not their gender.
