The United States is keeping a close eye on Russia-China relations and the potential effect on Ukraine and Taiwan. Foreign ministry spokesperson Joanne Ou said that US representatives spoke with Taiwan before and after meeting with Chinese diplomats in Rome on Monday.
During the Rome meeting, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan raised concerns that China plans to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine through military and economic aid. Taiwan’s foreign ministry said that China, as a member of the UN Security Council, should condemn the Russian attacks.
The ministry says the US is closely monitoring cross-strait tensions while Taiwan is also following developments in US-China relations.
Ou says that the US and Taiwan have a close relationship and strong channel of communication. US representatives sent her reports both before and after the recent meeting with China, but she is not able to disclose the specific details.
