Foreign minister: US commitment to Taiwan remains unchanged
The US has told Taiwan officials that its commitment to maintaining regional peace and stability remains unchanged

Foreign Minister Joseph Wu says that the US’ commitment to Taiwan remains unchanged even in the face of the Russia-Ukraine war. That came during a report Wu gave to the legislature on Wednesday morning.

Earlier this week, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with high-ranking Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi in Rome to talk about the Russia-Ukraine war. The meeting drew concern from Taiwan’s lawmakers who fear the US may compromise its Taiwan policy in order to come to an agreement with China. Recent reports indicate that Russia asked China for assistance in its war against Ukraine. US officials have said that they oppose China giving any assistance to Russia’s campaign against Ukraine.

China sees Taiwan as part of its territory and sees Taiwan’s relationship with the US as a threat to Beijing’s claim over the island.

Joseph Wu says that the US government has assured him that the US will not compromise its Taiwan policy in handling the Russia-Ukraine War. He says that the US recently unveiled its Indo-Pacific Policy, which demonstrates America’s commitment to the region.

Wu says that Taiwan should continue to increase its defense capabilities and demonstrate willingness to uphold its sovereignty.
