Taiwan’s defense ministry says Foreign Minister Joseph Wu did not breach confidentiality protocol by announcing an upcoming US arms deal. Wu told lawmakers on Wednesday that the United States will announce details of the deal soon.
Given that the deal is not yet finalized and the details are not public, reporters asked Taiwan’s vice defense minister on Thursday whether Wu’s comments were appropriate.
Vice Minister of Defense Alex Po says Wu “absolutely did not” breach confidentiality agreements with the United States. Po says Taiwan’s weapons deals with the US all take place in accordance with normal procedure.
As for whether the upcoming arms deal will include US cruise missiles, Po says he isn’t at liberty to comment.
