VIDEO: President Tsai draws ties between the Holocaust and Ukraine war
President Tsai says that Taiwan continues to fight for transformative justice, tolerance, and human rights.

As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth week, world leaders are continuing to search for ways to end the violence. A recent memorial event reminds the public that finding the way to the light may require examining some of the darkest periods in history.

The Holocaust may have ended almost 80 years ago, but its aftermath and lessons remain relevant today. On Tuesday, President Tsai Ing-wen attended an event dedicated to International Holocaust Rememberance Day, alongside representatives from Germany and Israel.

The event is meant to honor the six million Jews and other victims who died during the Holocaust, as well as the countless others who were deeply affected.

Tsai says that Taiwan continues to fight for transformative justice, tolerance, and human rights. Despite this progress, she says there are still many threats to liberty and democracy in the world today.

Tsai ties the horrors of the Holocaust to the current war in Ukraine. She says that Ukraine endured many hardships during World War II, and now it needs strong support from the international community to end this war.

Tsai said, “History teaches us that unity is essential in overcoming obstacles and it has never been more important as we seek to overcome the challenges we face today.”

In order to honor earlier generations’ fight for freedom, Tsai says it's essential to continue to stand up against authoritarianism and oppression throughout the world. She adds that uniting with other democracies is key to creating a more peaceful world for the next generation.

These words reflect the hopes of many people across the globe: that learning from dark periods of history can help the world overcome similar challenges in the future.
