Taiwanese military reservists have finished their first camp under a new, enhanced training regimen. The new system means reservists get called up once a year to complete two weeks of training. Under the old system, reservists only had to train for five to seven days once every two years.

Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng says he is pleased overall with the way that the first of the new training camps proceeded. But he says Taiwan’s military will keep pushing its reservists to perform better and better, regardless of how well they do in training.

Under the new system, reservists train 10 hours a day for two weeks without any rest days. During that time, they get weapons training, as well as learning how to build fortifications and set up camp.

The defense ministry’s All-Out Defense Mobilization Agency will carry out a review of the training regime at the end of 2022.
