A group of nuclear energy experts will travel from Taiwan to Japan this week to inspect the site of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant suffered three catastrophic meltdowns in 2011.
The company that operates the plant announced last year that it will release treated waste water from the plant into the sea.
The delegation from Taiwan will arrive in Japan on Wednesday to inspect facilities and make sure proper safety measures are in place.
Civic groups in Taiwan and South Korea say they worry that the water could contaminate marine wildlife and compromise food safety. But the International Atomic Energy Agency says the risks are very low.
The head of Taiwan’s Atomic Energy Council, Hsieh Shou-shing, says Japan plans to release the water over the next three decades. He says Taiwan should have a say in how Japan releases the water.
The group of eight experts will return from their trip on Sunday.
