VIDEO: Japanese, Taiwanese railways launch limited edition lunch boxes

International collaboration between railway companies isn’t anything out of the ordinary. They can share trade secrets, technology and training techniques. Now two companies from Taiwan and Japan have teamed up to share something completely different: lunch.

A bell sounds in a busy railway station in Taiwan. No, conductors aren’t rushing people to get to their trains. They’re announcing the sale of a new lunch box. ‘Lunch?’ you ask? Well, lunch boxes are a commonly sold delicacy on trains in Taiwan and Japan.

You might think that food sales at a train station aren’t all that exciting, but you clearly haven’t met this man. He ran all the way from home after seeing the lunch box announcement live on the internet. He’s still trying to catch his breath. For train fanatics like him, this is no ordinary meal.

The Taiwan Railways Administration teamed up with Japan’s Shinano Railway Co. to release this limited edition lunch box. Inside, roast chicken and smoked duck are laid out on a bed of rice.

Only 30 of these boxes are on offer each day for 10 days. But if you’re bummed that you might miss out on such a delectable delicacy, there’s no need to worry. This isn’t the first time Taiwan Railway Administration has teamed up with a Japanese counterpart to release a special meal. And, judging by how popular these meals on-the-go are proving to be, it seems unlikely to be the last.
