A recent poll taken during the Ukraine War shows that 60% of Taiwanese surveyed worry Taiwan will have to face a Chinese invasion alone and 78% surveyed don’t think that Taiwan can defend itself alone. That was the latest from a Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation poll released on Tuesday.
The poll showed that many are afraid Taiwan would have defend itself alone and do not think the US or Japan would help. The survey found that 56% don’t think the US would join in a war against China if Beijing attacked Taiwan while 35% think the US would join.
More people surveyed believe that Japan would help defend Taiwan. The poll found that 49% think Japan would help while 43% think Japan would not offer help.
The Ukraine War has also led to greater support for extending the current mandatory four-month conscription. Of those polled, 77% said the current length is unreasonable and 76% said it should be extended to a year.
The poll results included answers from 1,077 adults 20 years and above surveyed between March 14 and 15.
