Minister: Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be met with global condemnation
Mainland Affairs Council Chiu Tai-san gives a report at the legislature

Mainland Affairs Council Minister Chiu Tai-san says that China will face international condemnation if it invades Taiwan. The Mainland Affairs Council is Taiwan’s main China policymaking body. Chiu’s comments came during a report he gave to the legislature on Wednesday morning.

Last week, US President Joe Biden held a call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war. The meeting drew concern from Taiwan’s lawmakers who fear the US may compromise its Taiwan policy in order to come to an agreement with China. Chiu says that the US briefed Taiwanese officials on the contents of the call afterwards. According to Chiu, “70% to 80% of the meeting focused on Ukraine.”

Chiu says that Biden told Xi that the US will continue to uphold its commitments to Taiwan.

Chiu says that China is watching the situation in Ukraine closely. He says China sees that if it chose to invade Taiwan, it would face immense pressure from the international community. Chiu says that countries all over the world are invested in what happens in the Taiwan Strait.
