The foreign ministry says it deeply regrets news of the death of Madeleine Albright. Albright was the first woman to be US Secretary of State and also served as the United States’ ambassador to the UN. She died on Wednesday at the age of 84.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry says it has “the utmost respect and gratitude” to Albright for her work promoting democracy, peace and human rights around the world.

After leaving politics in 2001, Albright became chair of the National Democratic Institute in Washington DC and co-chair of the UN’s Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor.

In 2019, Albright told the US House Foreign Affairs Committee that the United States should stand by its commitment to help protect Taiwan from attack.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry has asked its representatives in the United States to express Taiwan’s condolences to Albright’s family.
