Taiwan has sent a delegation to Japan to oversee Japan's preparations for releasing wastewater from a nuclear power plant into the ocean.

The wastewater has been used to cool damaged reactor buildings in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power plant since 2011, when the plant suffered three nuclear meltdowns.

The group of eight Taiwanese experts arrived in Japan on Wednesday night to examine Japan's plan to dispose of the contaminated water. The company that manages the power plant says it could begin releasing the water as early as next spring.

The Taiwan delegation plans to discuss the technology Japan will use to carry out the plan. On Friday, they are expected to go to the first Fukushima nuclear reactor to inspect equipment and speak with on-site workers.

The delegation will stay in Japan to observe the preparations until Sunday.
