Taiwan’s labor minister has refused to comment on how much the minimum wage could rise this year. Media reports using the government’s own wage rise formula have suggested Taiwan could raise the minimum wage by more than 5%.
Right now, workers in Taiwan get a minimum wage of NT$168 (US$5.80) an hour or NT$25,250 (US$880) a month.
The labor ministry’s Minimum Wage Review Committee meets in the third quarter of every year to decide on next year’s minimum wage. Last year, the committee raised wages by 5.21%, the biggest increase in 15 years.
Labor Minister Hsu Ming-chun refused to be drawn into speculation on this year’s changes to the minimum wage on Monday. She says only that the ministry will “consider the economic situation” and work towards an “upward adjustment”.
