Electricity prices in Taiwan will remain unchanged until the latter half of this year. On Tuesday, the economics ministry’s electricity price review committee postponed making a decision on electricity rates until June 29.
There’s concern that if prices don’t increase, electricity provider TaiPower will struggle to continue operation. During a report to the Legislature on Wednesday, Economics Minister Wang Mei-hua said that the war in Ukraine has caused short-term fluctuations in energy prices. She says her ministry wants to hold off on making a decision on electricity prices until the situation in Ukraine stabilizes.
On Tuesday, Deputy Economics Minister Lin Chuan-neng said that any change to electricity prices will affect Taiwan’s consumer prices, which have already spiked in recent months. He said his ministry does not want a price adjustment to speed up inflation.
Wang says the government is closely monitoring TaiPower’s operations and will use that information as a reference during the next electricity price review.
