The National Human Rights Commission says Taiwan should ban parents and caregivers from violently punishing children. That came on Friday as the commission set out its recommendations for how Taiwan should safeguard children’s rights.
The commission says reports of violence against children reached a five-year high in 2020. That kind of violence, the commission says, is increasingly happening at home, rather than in public.
According to government statistics, 21 children in Taiwan were killed by their parents last year.
The Human Rights Commission is urging the government to ban corporal punishment at home. It says authorities should check on pregnant women and new mothers, and set up a proper safety net to prevent violence against children.
