Taiwan should hold coast guard exercises with other countries. That was the word from a defense expert at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research, Taiwan’s top military think tank.
In a recent article, Shu Hsiao-huang said that as joint coast guard exercises are less sensitive than military exercises, Taiwan should work with with the coast guards of other nations and hold joint exercises.
The US and Taiwan signed a coast guard agreement in March 2021 to strengthen cooperation in dealing with gray zone maritime conflicts. Shu said that maritime hybrid conflicts and gray zone activities are emerging threats that the US and its allies must deal with.
Shu also noted that China’s naval forces outnumber that of other countries. He said that as China poses a threat to the Indo-Pacific, the US and Taiwan should strengthen their naval and coast guard forces to be able to respond to any situation.
