Ninety-nine schools and kindergartens in Taiwan have canceled classes due to a rise in domestic COVID-19 cases. Education Minister Pan Wen-chung says his ministry will assess the outbreak’s severity and decide how schools should move forward.
Over the past week, Taiwan has seen a surge in confirmed domestic COVID-19 cases. People in 13 counties and cities have been diagnosed with the disease. The affected schools include 29 universities, 15 high schools, 11 junior high schools, 38 elementary schools, and 6 kindergartens. Some of those schools, however, will transition to remote learning.
Currently, health authorities mandate that schools with two or more classes in which students have been confirmed with COVID-19 should close. However, Pan says that he’s working with the health ministry to determine whether or not that policy needs adjusting.
