The speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has canceled her trip to Asia after testing positive for COVID-19. Japanese media had reported that Pelosi planned to visit Taiwan.
On Thursday, Pelosi’s spokesperson released a statement saying the US House speaker had a positive test result, but she is not experiencing any symptoms.
Pelosi’s spokesperson confirmed on Twitter that the US has postponed a trip to Asia by members of Congress, led by Speaker Pelosi. The delegation had planned to travel to Japan to meet Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Japan’s Fuji News Network reported that Pelosi would then visit Taiwan.
If the trip had gone ahead, Pelosi would have become the first sitting US House speaker to visit Taiwan for 25 years.
President Tsai Ing-wen has wished Pelosi a speedy recovery.
