Chief of the Swedish-Taiwanese parliamentarian association Boriana Åberg said the world's democracies must "stand with Taiwan". She made the remarks during her delegation's video conference with President Tsai Ing-wen on Tuesday.
During the video conference, President Tsai Ing-wen highlighted the growing ties and closer cooperation between the two countries. Tsai also said she looked forward to setting up direct flights between the Taiwan and Sweden. Current bilateral cooperation includes efforts in dealing with climate change, gender equality and countering disinformation.
Åberg said that Taiwan is “a great example for the one billion people on the other side of the strait”. She also said that in the light of the atrocities committed by Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, the world's democracies must "stand with Taiwan and defend its freedom and its democratic values by any means.” Åberg said, "We are prepared to do everything in our power to defend the existence and sovereignty of Taiwan."
Swedish MEP Charlie Weimers said he would work towards a bilateral investment agreement between the EU and Taiwan. Weimers authored the landmark EU-Taiwan Report in the EU Parliament last October.
Vice President William Lai met with the Swedish delegation at the Presidential Office and said that he looked forward to a closer friendship between the two countries.
