Taiwan getting closer to joining World Health Assembly: Foreign minister

Taiwan is moving closer to taking part in international organizations like the World Health Assembly. That's according to a report from Foreign Minister Joseph Wu on Thursday.

Wu says that Taiwan has still not received an invitation to join the World Health Assembly, which is the main decision-making body of the World Health Organization. The assembly is set to meet next month, between May 22 to 28.

Wu says Taiwan is still trying to seek approval from current members of the assembly.

But the foreign minister says that the international community is showing greater support for Taiwan's political ideals and values. He adds that Taiwan has also attracted a lot of positive attention for its approach to handling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wu admits that it won't be easy for Taiwan to join these organizations, but it's something Taiwan can accomplish by winning over one country at a time. In particular, he says the US Congress has shown increasing political support for Taiwan, which could help Taiwan gain entry to various global institutions.
