After five years in a Chinese prison, democracy activist Lee Ming-che will finally return home to Taiwan on Friday morning.

Lee was arrested by Chinese police in 2017 during a visit to Guangdong Province, and imprisoned for “subversion of state power”.

Taiwanese human rights groups say Lee was unjustly detained. Lee’s wife has campaigned tirelessly for his release.

Since the pandemic began, Lee has been barred from receiving calls from his wife and writing to his family.

China said on Wednesday that it would release Lee after he had served his sentence, but it didn’t provide a specific date. Now, a mediator between China and Taiwan says Lee will fly home from Xiamen to Taiwan on Friday morning.

Flight schedules show only one plane leaving Xiamen for Taiwan that day. XiamenAir MF 887 will land in Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at 10:25 a.m.
