A delegation of six US senators arrived in Taiwan on Thursday and met with President Tsai Ing-wen.
President Tsai Ing-wen bumps elbows with a delegation of six members of US Congress led by Senator Lindsey Graham. The visit is seen as a sign of deepening ties between Taiwan and the United States.
Tsai says the delegation has come at a meaningful time, just over 43 years after former US President Jimmy Carter signed the Taiwan Relations Act into law. The act is a piece of legislation that forms the framework for US-Taiwan relations in the absence of formal ties. Tsai says she hopes that Taiwan can play an active role in the United States’ Indo-Pacific strategy and work with the US to promote trade in the region.
In a speech, delegation leader Lindsey Graham says he made sure the delegation made a stop as a sign of bipartisan commitment to reassure the people of Taiwan.
The delegation also met with Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng on Friday afternoon before concluding their visit Friday evening.
