10,000 local cases a day possible by end of April: Health ministry

Taiwan’s daily local cases of COVID-19 may hit 10,000 by the end of April. That’s according to a report released on Thursday by Taiwan’s health ministry.

Health Ministry official Chou Jih-haw says the ministry is working to control the number of cases, but at current estimates, there will be around 9,600 local cases on April 30.

Chou adds that this number is not definite, and that the ministry’s calculations say daily cases could end up between roughly 6,100 and 15,600 a day.

With the rise in cases, some parents are concerned about vaccinating their young children. Like the European Union, Taiwan has authorized the Moderna vaccine for children. In Taiwan, kids aged 6 to 11 can get two half-doses of the shot.

Cabinet spokesperson Lo Ping-cheng says that Taiwan is also close to finalizing a deal to order shipments of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children. He says that the Pfizer-BioNTech child vaccine has a different dosage and composition than the vaccine for adults.
