US Senator Rick Scott met on Thursday with Taiwan’s representative to Lithuania, Eric Huang. It was the first time a US senator has visited the Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania.

The office is at the center of a diplomatic row between Lithuania and China. Beijing banned most imports from Lithuania after authorities in Vilnius allowed Taiwan to set up the office and name it the “Taiwanese Representative Office”. Normally, Taiwan is forced to use the word “Taipei” in its diplomatic missions to avoid angering Beijing.

In a tweet following Scott’s visit to the office, the senator said that the United States, Taiwan and Lithuania will continue working together to fight for freedom, democracy and human rights. He also says the countries will fight against what he calls “evil regimes like Communist China and Russia”.

Scott says that he supports developing ties between Taiwan and Lithuania and values the strengthening of Taiwan-US relations.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Representative Huang said that Scott’s visit proves that Taiwan, the United States and Lithuania enjoy close ties. Huang thanked Scott for his long-running support for Taiwan.
