The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has denied a media report saying that the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, will visit Taiwan in May at the invitation of DPP.

According to a report published Friday by a local online news web site, DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen sent an emissary to India at the end of last year to extend the invitation. The report also said that the DPP emissary is set to visit Japan soon to pave the way for Tsai’s presidential bid.

On Friday, DPP spokesman Cheng Yung-peng said the report is far from true. He said the media should fact-check the story.

"It’s not a case of miscommunication, it’s patently untrue. [I] hope the media will help the DPP clarify the matter," said Cheng.

Rumor has it that DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen is planning to visit Japan and the United States to prepare for the 2016 presidential elections. Tsai has confirmed that she does have plans to visit the United States.
